Shrinking the obstacles to cellular communications

Battery operation and the compact size of today’s cellular telephones and personal communications systems put many demands on the high-frequency semiconductors and optoelectronic components used in these devices. Low current consumption and high efficiency are critical for extended talk time. Integration helps make handsets more compact, while competitive price and surface-mount packages are necessary to meet cost targets in a consumer market.

HP provides a wide range of low-voltage, low-cost miniature RF components that meet these needs, along with high-efficiency LEDs for indicators and illumination, and the new infrared modules to provide simple, low-cost connectivity to equipment for mobile offices.

LEDs

HP offers extremely small surface-mount LEDs that are used as backlighting for keypads and LCD displays and as status indicators. Their small size and lower power consumption enable compact design and long battery life. HP’s alphanumeric displays give handsets improved visibility in dimly-lit environments and come in a variety of colors.

Diodes

HP offers low-current PIN diodes, a low-cost way to implement transmit-receive switching and level setting applications, and low-cost Schottky-barrier surface-mount diodes for detectors.

Infrared transceivers, emitters and detectors

HP’s IrDA-compliant IR devices offer a low-cost, cableless connection at data rates to 4 Mb/s for use in a wide range of equipment, from PDAs and notebook computers to mobile phones and pagers. IR connectivity to telephony devices such as phones and pagers provides the ability to send and receive data from long distances while retaining cableless ease of use.

RF integrated circuits

Our wide array of integrated circuits includes mixers for frequency conversion, LNAs, gain blocks, driver amplifiers with receive switches, vector modulators and highly integrated ICs. HP is continually expanding our family of miniature packaged, 3-volt, low current semiconductors to meet the need for smaller size and longer battery life in compact handsets.
