Vehicle Exterior Lighting
Sending a signal for improved safety and reliability
Since 1987, the use of LEDs as replacements for incandescent bulbs has gained rapid acceptance in automotive signal lighting products. Today, more than one million vehicles produced annually have deep-red LED center-high-mount stop lamps (CHMSL), taking advantage of the lamps improved safety and much higher reliability. Unlike incandescent bulbs that are sensitive to shock and vibration failures, LEDs are expected to last the life of the vehicle, reducing maintenance costs. And, in addition to their styling benefits, cost-efficient LED-based car and truck lights consume on average only 20% of the electrical power drawn by incandescent lamps.
Red and amber LEDs are also being commercially used in truck running lights and other external applications where significant replacement cost savings can be realized. With the availability of LEDs meeting spectral standards for amber and red stop lamps, there is little doubt that LEDs will be carried on all automotive rear exterior lighting in the not-too-distant future.
